Long after it had become clear to the whole world that Rome was no longer the power it had once been and instead had descended into decadency, only it's earliest vassels preferred to believe the fiction of perpetual greatness. Like children faced with the prospect of adulthood, independence was their greatest fear.
Couldn't agree more. I travelled to America in 1966...SS Bremen (ex German troop ship!)Southampton to NYC,Greyhound bus to Albuquerque. Studied and taught and fell in love with a girl and her country.
Very will written précis of the America of today, & great to read.

I enjoy your work but feel you are too naive in accepting that Trump has truly tackled the important “I”s: Inflation, Immigration and Islam. He is not just falling short of goals but has largely abandoned those goals, both in word and deed, similar to the way conservatives and nationalists in the UK consoled themselves contentedly to sleep during the Tory years of Cameron, May, Johnson and Sunak.
