A black activist who urges pregnant mothers to teach their unborn children about racism addressed civil servants as part of a Home Office diversity programme, this Substack can reveal.

Uju Asika, an expert on “anti-racist parenting”, has claimed that children as young as three are “conditioned to be biased against people of a different race” and urged parents to be “proactive” in countering racial bias.

Priti Patel’s removal as Shadow Foreign Secretary simply made me wonder: Why was she ever appointed in the first place?

She was, after all, the politician who did the most to open Britain’s borders to low-skilled, third-world migration. Patel also failed to stop the boats, and oversaw the policing of tweets.

Priti Patel was appointed Home Secretary by Boris Johnson in July 2019. Five months later Lawangeen Abdulrahimzai, an Afghani, smuggled himself into Britain. He told Patel’s Home Office he was 14, and they believed him; he was sent to a school in Dorset, where he assaulted children and carried knives; he was placed in foster care, where he assaulted his foster mother; he was reported to police for carrying a machete; then, in March 2022, he plunged a knife into the heart of 21-year-old Thomas Roberts, killing him instantly during an argument over an E-scooter. If the Home Office had properly vetted Abdulrahimzai, they would have found he was a 19-year-old on the run for a double murder in Serbia. They didn’t, and Priti Patel left her role as Home Secretary five months after Thomas’s murder, removed following Boris Johnson’s downfall.

Roberts was not the only Brit murdered by illegal immigrants under Priti Patel’s watch. I count Lorraine Cox, James Furlong, David Wails, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett among the victims. Their killers had no right to be in the country, yet Patel and the Conservative Party failed to prevent their deaths.

During her three years in post, Darren Grimes was investigated for failing to censor David Starkey in a YouTube interview, Darren Brady was arrested for retweeting a meme, and a police officer was arrested and prosecuted for sharing a George Floyd meme in a private WhatsApp group.

Patel’s infamy, however, stems largely from her role in the Boriswave.

From 2019 to 2022, 570,000 Indian nationals, 263,000 Chinese, 200,000 Nigerians, 122,000 Pakistanis, 49,000 Bangladeshis, 28,000 Ghanaians and 27,000 Zimbabweans made Britain their home. These figures do not include the many hundreds of thousands who came after her tenure, enabled by her immigration reforms. They came because Priti Patel (and Boris Johnson) wanted them to come.

Patel opened new routes for “skilled” workers, healthcare workers, international students and their dependants, while abolishing the cap on skilled migration. She also lowered the salary and skills thresholds for skilled workers.

Her skilled visa route allowed kebab workers, Halal butchers, call-centre supervisors, bar managers and gym instructors to come to Britain. The scheme meant that one butcher in Preston alone sponsored 91 visas; one kebab house in Bradford sponsored 14, while another in Birmingham sponsored 12. Across the country, 56 kebab houses and 83 businesses with “Halal” in their name sponsored skilled worker visas between 2021 and 2023.

Patel’s Health and Social Care Visa was meant to fill gaps in the care system. Instead, the number of vacancies in the sector actually increased after the route was opened. Care workers and their dependants were also exempted from paying the immigration health surcharge. And so it became a route for hundreds of thousands of low-skilled migrants from outside of Europe to access Britain. Between January 2021 and June 2024, 647,000 people received Health and Care visas, 270,000 workers and 377,000 dependants. Some care providers sponsored hundreds of workers: one had 498 visas granted since May 2022, while Home Office inspectors found that 275 visas had been issued to a care home that did not even exist.

Patel’s reforms did more to transform Britain demographically in three years than Tony Blair managed in thirteen. The migrants who entered Britain, illegally and legally, under her watch will cost taxpayers hundreds of billions in welfare, the NHS, schooling and housing. She has accelerated Britain’s demographic change, turbocharging the decline of the white British population relative to ethnic minority groups.

In January last year, Patel defended her immigration record, describing those she had allowed into Britain as the “brightest [and] the best coming to the country”. She repeatedly called them skilled migrants and suggested the NHS would have collapsed without them. She refused to apologise to voters who had supported Brexit and the Tories, believing doing so would reduce immigration.

Kemi Badenoch had the perfect opportunity to sack and expel Patel from the Tory Party, as she has done with others, to represent the party’s total break with its immigration betrayal. The fact she did not do so signalled that the Conservative Party hasn’t changed a bit.

The Priti Patel problem was not even resolved by removing her from the front bench. Instead, she was simply given a new role, which Patel described as an opportunity to “strengthen diplomatic links with international sister parties and centre-right movements around the world”. To Marine Le Pen, the AfD, Vox, PiS, MAGA and all the conservative movements around the world, if you want to learn how to open your country’s borders and tank your party to its worst position in over a century, book your meeting with Priti Patel today.

A senior BBC executive sent an email expressing solidarity with non-British staff and condemning “hatred” following unrest in Northern Ireland in reaction to an attempted beheading.

The email, revealed by this Substack, was sent to BBC workers in June after riots broke out in Belfast following an alleged attempt by an African illegal migrant to behead Northern Ireland-born Stephen Ogilvie.

Jack Whyte, the BBC’s Chief Technology Officer, wrote that he wished to “express our solidarity with colleagues who may feel particularly vulnerable or fearful at this time, including those who have come to Northern Ireland and the UK from other countries.”

Whyte condemned “hatred, intimidation, and violence in all its forms” and said the BBC is “committed to fostering an environment where every colleague feels supported, included, and able to bring their whole self to work”.

The email came after Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old from Africa, allegedly stabbed Stephen Ogilvie multiple times, leaving him without a left eye and with deep cuts to his head, face and back.

A source inside the broadcaster said: “The BBC offered solidarity to foreign staff but not to native Brits who might be worried about illegal migrants beheading them.”

Home Office civil servants said the English flag was “triggering” and made them fear for their lives, a leaked recording reveals.

Last year, Home Office staff were invited to a “safe space” to discuss the “concerning misuse of the English flag” and how it had “left some colleagues feeling anxious or unsettled”.

One official said that when he sees the English flag, he now thinks, “Am I in danger? Or are my children in danger?” He continued: “Right now… it is particularly triggering.”

During the half-hour meeting, civil servants discussed how the campaign to hoist British flags across the country made them fear for their lives and those of their families.

One said: “Being a mixed race person of colour I’ve been finding it extremely difficult… I’ve noticed so many more people now using the flag to try and legitimise refusing immigrants into the country.”

Another ethnic minority official said the flag campaign had “caused… concern for my own safety and that of my family and friends”, while one Indian civil servant said: “I’m terrified of bringing a mixed race child into this world”.

White Home Office staff agreed with their ethnic minority colleagues. One commented: “It’s a scary time to be a person of colour in the UK right now, and as a person with white privilege, I can’t speak to my friends’ experiences but I can stand alongside you and be an ally.”

Home Office staff were sent an email inviting them to the event, which included details of 11 different mental-health support services in response to concerns raised about the display of the English flag.

Two civil servants, both describing themselves as British Muslims, said they could “feel the ‘vibes’ of hate when you walk the streets” and that “[the protests] leave me fearing for my safety and that of my family and friends.”

Eniola Aluko, the former England footballer and Adidas ambassador, has accused “the white media” of sharing the same “demonic spirit” as Jim Crow-era lynchers.

In an Instagram comment posted on Monday, the broadcaster described Jason Arday’s death as a “lynching”, and said: “the white media have the same demonic spirit as the white people in the Jim Crow era who used to have lunch and picnics in front of lynched black bodies.”

She continued: “Same spirit, different generation. They haven’t changed.”

Aluko also called for media companies to be held legally accountable for their reporting on Arday, adding that “there is [sic] established harassment laws in this country”.

Her comments were criticised by free speech campaigners.

Lord Young, Director of the Free Speech Union, said he found her remarks about journalists “grossly offensive”.

Baroness Fox, a prominent free speech campaigner and Director of the Academy of Ideas, said: “It’s so galling and morally repugnant that race is being weaponised to whip up a frenzied assault on media independence.”

Fox described Aluko’s post as “distastefully vicious bullying” and warned that it was “bloody dangerous, not least for free thinkers, democrats, or any members of the awkward squad - whether they are black or white.”

Aluko is a prominent ex-football star and broadcaster. She played women’s football for Chelsea and Juventus, and after retiring in 2020 became a regular pundit for ITV and other broadcasters.

In 2023, Aluko was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to football and charity.

Her Instagram comment was in response to a video published by Kehinde Andrews, a Black studies academic, who described the scrutiny of Jason Arday as a “lynching”, accusing critics of joining a smear campaign and invoking “respectability politics”.

Following Arday’s death, Aluko has made a series of posts about the topic.

She wrote on Instagram that she is “committed to working with people to ensure legal accountability and stricter independent regulation of the media who are responsible for disproportionate racialised harassment.”

“We are Greeks from Ithaca,” proudly declared actor Himesh Patel in a thick Californian accent, dressed in Greek armour in Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey.

Patel’s parents were born in Zambia and Kenya, though they hail from India, while Patel was born in Cambridgeshire. He grew up speaking Gujarati.

In The Odyssey, he plays Eurylochus, Odysseus’s second-in-command from an island near Ithaca called Same.

Now I ask you to imagine the following scene.

The camera pans down on two Irishmen, pale as ghosts, their bright ginger hair complementing the colourful Indian clothes they are wearing. Playing Arjuna and Yudhishthira in a Bollywood epic of the Mahabharata, they turn to a local villager.

“We’re Indians from Hastinapur,” one tells him in a strong Belfast twang.

Or how about this?

Deep in the Ghanaian interior, a Swede and a Lithuanian, their blonde hair spilling from beneath colourful kente headdresses, play Ananse and Nyame in a Hollywood adaptation of an ancient Ghanaian folklore.

Turning to a local villager, one proudly declares with unmistakably Swedish intonation: “We’re Ghanaians from Kumasi.”

Such scenes would be not only absurd but insulting. They would drag the viewer out of the story, leaving them wondering why a cast of northern Europeans were playing Indian princes or African legends.

Indian Eurylochus is the most prominent example of Nolan “race-swapping” Western characters, though it has been talked about the least. Perhaps if Patel had offered an extraordinary performance, his casting could be forgiven, but he didn’t, and it cannot.

Zendaya’s portrayal of an imagined Athena was flat, dreary and empty. In other words, Zendaya played Zendaya.

Nolan cast Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, the face that launched a thousand ships, and various other African-American actors played Greek warriors or poets. The film opens with Travis Scott, a rapper, playing a bard. Korean-American Will Yun Lee plays Anchialus, another of Odysseus’s crew.

This multicultural cast of “Greeks” looked more like a Halloween party in LA than anything resembling the Bronze Age.

For Nolan, Western canon must be for everyone. It is universal, of no place or people. Our culture, the most sophisticated and extraordinary any civilisation has produced, cannot be credited to Western peoples. That, you see, would be racist and against the principle of equality, which is sacred to Nolan as we shall see.

The erasure of the Greeks from The Odyssey is one of many problems with the film.

At 2:30am on Monday morning, a ‘small’ boat carrying a record 230 illegal migrants was intercepted by authorities and brought to the Kent coast.

Based on a Dutch study which estimated the lifetime cost of an asylum migrant to the Treasury at £400,000, the 230 men could ultimately cost the British taxpayer a collective £92 million. That’s one expensive dinghy.

But for Kay Burley, the former Sky News presenter, the boat brimming with young African men posed less of a threat than a group of young shoppers at her local Waitrose, writing on X: “I’ve seen longer queues in the ‘five items or fewer’ isle [sic]. Stop it, just stop it!”

She was replying to Reform’s Zia Yusuf, who called the boat an “invasion”.

So who is correct? The small-boats crisis has been ongoing since 2018, during which Tory and Labour governments have facilitated the arrival of more than 200,000 illegal migrants on Britain’s shores. In that time, we have seen innumerable cases of these young men from Africa and Asia (there are almost no women and children) committing some of the most horrific crimes against British people.

Eleven weeks after Sudanese 27-year-old Deng Chol Majek took off from a boat in Dover, he took a screwdriver and plunged it into the face of Rhiannon Whyte twenty-three times. Eleven of those stabs penetrated her skull. It took her three days to die.

Afghan Lawangeen Abdulrahimzai arrived in Britain illegally in 2018 (on the back of a lorry). It took him nearly four years before he took a blade and shoved it into the chest of 21-year-old aspiring Royal Marine Thomas Roberts, killing him nearly instantly after the two had argued over the use of an electric scooter. In his years before killing Roberts, he terrorised school children with knives (after the Home Office bought his story that he was 14, when he was actually 19, and so was placed in a school with Year 9 pupils) and his poor foster mother. He was wanted for two prior murders on the continent, but the Home Office didn’t bother to do proper background checks on him, and so young Thomas had to die.

Egyptian 26-year-old Ibrahim Alshafe and Iranian 26-year-old Abdulla Ahmadi met each other on a small boat from France on 19 June last year. A few months later they raped a woman on Brighton beach, while another illegal migrant they met at their taxpayer-funded hotel, Karin Al-Danasurt, 21, another Egyptian, recorded the attack on his phone.

I could cite innumerable cases of attacks illegal migrants have committed. From terrorism to rape to murder. The cost in blood and treasure to the British people has been immense.

And yet despite all this, to those like Kay Burley these men are as innocuous as M&S shoppers.

There is no invasion. These are simply desperate people from war-torn countries looking for safety (we must all forget that France is a safe country, as is every country they have been to in Europe and most of them in Africa and the Middle East). They are not young men, but women and children.

Responding to Monday’s record-breaking boat, the prime minister’s spokesperson said: “We’ve seen today some appalling images... of young babies being put into these unseaworthy craft... shocking images, and they show the reality behind the ruthless smuggling gangs that are prepared to risk human lives for profit.”

The statement reminded me of when Labour MP Darren Jones said on Question Time: “the majority of the people in these boats are children, babies and women”.

Official figures put the number of men at around 90% of small-boat arrivals. Labour’s understanding of illegal migration is contemptuously ignorant, wilful or not.

A civil servant is being investigated by Whitehall after describing white culture as “barbarism and violence”, this Substack can reveal.

In a public Facebook post on July 28, Leslie-Ann Mills-Gomez-Glennie, an official at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), said white men feel entitled and linked white culture to sexual violence.

The official also claimed that the Home Office’s decision to ban far-Left American streamer Hasan Piker from Britain was made “at the request of America and Israel”, while in another post she said: “there is no Israel, only historic Palestine”.

A government spokesperson said: “We take these allegations extremely seriously. The matter is being investigated in line with the appropriate procedures, and it would be inappropriate to comment further while that process is ongoing.”

Mills-Gomez was responding to a member of the public on Facebook who described watching a documentary in an African village where teenage boys said they did not need to obtain consent to have sex with women.

The commenter continued: “This was one village out of the many thousands in Africa, I’m not saying any other one had the same thinking because I don’t know.

“All I’m saying is that some cultures can be very different to ours and probably would require some work before they are compatible with our society.”

Mills-Gomez replied: “stop the bull💩 that’s your culture, white men feel entitled. You[sic] culture is barbarism and violence, who wants that”.

Discussing her comments on Israel, a spokesperson for the Campaign Against Antisemitism said: “This rhetoric is odious, and some of it draws on classic tropes about Jewish power that breach the International Definition of Antisemitism.”

“Repudiating Israel’s existence – essentially denying the Jewish right to self-determination – is also despicable, and speaks to the abhorrent fantasies of the anti-Israel movement.”

“Clearly someone with these views should not be working in Whitehall, nor with the Royal Family. There must be an urgent investigation.”

The Ministry of Justice will use race-based hiring panels after concluding that too many white candidates are being hired and promoted, a leaked Race Action Plan reveals.

The plan, published by HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), says the department will test “ethnically diverse recruitment panels” as part of a series of diversity initiatives aimed at increasing the recruitment and promotion of ethnic minority staff.

Senior MoJ staff are told to “proactively seek to encourage ethnic minority colleagues to apply for senior roles” and to “encourage ethnic minority candidates who are unsuccessful at interview to seek feedback”.

The plan also includes “talent programmes for ethnic minority staff” and “the use of mock interviews for ethnic minority candidates” among a series of diversity initiatives for non-white staff.

The leaked document proposes race-conscious recruitment measures after concluding that, although ethnic minorities are overrepresented in the courts system overall, they are underrepresented in senior management.

Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy said the diversity hiring panels are “not only immoral but almost certainly unlawful”.

He continued: “Labour’s choice for Judicial Appointments Committee Chair told Parliament she doesn’t believe in appointing solely on merit. We need a return to real equality before the law, not another government Race Action Plan that is, itself, racist.”

“Insisting on ethnic quotas on recruitment panels goes beyond what the Equality Act allows and amounts to discrimination,” Timothy added.

The document acknowledges that ethnic minorities already make up 20.5% of HM Courts & Tribunals Service staff, above their 16.9% share of the UK’s economically active population, but claims that senior officials “are not similarly representative of this data”.

The plan was sent to MoJ staff on 5 June this year, just weeks after the conviction of Henry Nowak’s killer.

An MoJ source told me that some staff were shocked that the department was pushing DEI initiatives after the release of police bodycam footage showing Nowak’s death.

The government’s handling of Nowak’s murder has led to accusations of two-tier policing after Nowak’s Sikh killer was believed when he accused his victim of racism, while Nowak was arrested as he lay dying.

The Race Action Plan states that all senior officials “must visibly champion” the values of diversity and tells all MoJ staff that they must support the delivery of the plan.

The document also claims that “the lived experience of ethnic minority staff is... more negative than that of white colleagues”.

As evidence, it cites “listening sessions with ethnic minority colleagues”, during which participants claimed that “grievances raised by ethnic minority colleagues are not always handled fairly or effectively”.

The plan also points to relatively small differences between white and ethnic minority staff in responses to internal staff surveys.

For example, 3.4% of ethnic minority staff, compared with 2.2% of white staff, reported dissatisfaction with the appraisal and reporting system.

The plan also highlighted a slight gap in perceived access to learning and development opportunities, with 6.1% of ethnic minority staff reporting a lack of opportunities, compared with 5.6% of white staff.

Officials were also told to “address non-inclusive behaviours”.

Meanwhile, staff networks for ethnic minority civil servants would hold “safe listening spaces”, while senior civil servants acting as ‘Diversity Champions’ were instructed to create “an internal agreed communication that responds quickly following incidents of racial tension or disorder”.

The leaked plan comes as the Ministry of Justice faces scrutiny over its handling of the Henry Nowak case, which prompted accusations of two-tier policing.

It also follows growing political debate over diversity, equity and inclusion policies across the Civil Service.

An HMCTS spokesperson said: “Our rules are clear - no candidate must ever be given an unfair advantage in the workplace. Selection processes are conducted entirely on merit through fair and open competition and in accordance with established eligibility criteria.”

England’s recent ethnic demographic transformation, the fastest and most dramatic in our thousand-year history, has upended every corner of our home.

Returning to Britain after more than two years abroad has been a sobering experience. Spending any significant amount of time away from the country, or even part of the country, can be shocking upon your return.

For the past few weeks, while searching for a place to live in London, I stayed with my parents in Selsey, a relatively remote coastal town in West Sussex.

Selsey is a popular tourist destination for working-class Brits, though like most seaside resorts it lacks the wealth it once had. In the war it held an RAF base; in fact it was the closest Allied landing ground to the Normandy coast on D-Day.

My family have had a cottage in the town for some years, and it is near Portsmouth and Chichester, where I grew up. During my younger years these places were nearly entirely English. Selsey still pretty much is, though walking past the fish-and-chip and sweet shops you will now see the odd Burqa-clad woman and a few young African men among the tourists.

According to the 2021 census, Chichester, a beautiful Roman settlement with ancient walls and a stunning Cathedral, was 95.4% white. One suspects, wandering the city’s Roman roads, that this number has significantly declined since the Boriswave.

This Substack can reveal that a senior police chief backed the BLM movement during the riots of 2020, telling officers to “take the knee.”

In a letter published here for the first time, Ben-Julian Harrington, Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, told police chiefs that they “would have our support” if officers chose to take the knee at BLM protests.

An internal police risk assessment also warned officers that “refusing protestor requests to ‘take the knee’ and instead walking away or folding their arms” could “trigger” protesters to riot.

The letter from Harrington, who is also Chief Constable of Essex Police, was addressed to the National Police Coordination Centre (NPoCC), the body responsible for coordinating police responses across the UK during periods of public unrest.

Writing in the aftermath of the BLM riots in June 2020, Harrington issued guidance to police forces on whether officers should take the knee while policing protests.

He described taking the knee as “an act of solidarity and empathy for George Floyd, his family and all who seek justice and accountability for those concerned”.

While emphasising that operational decisions should remain with local commanders, he said officers who wished to do so “in line with their personal values and emotions” could take the knee.

“As long as this does not endanger the public, their colleagues, themselves or undermine the aims of the policing operation... this would have our support,” Harrington wrote.

Police were warned against arresting violent BLM protesters who assaulted officers or caused criminal damage to avoid “triggering” them, a leaked document reveals.

An internal police risk assessment published during the Black Lives Matter protests of June 2020 warned officers of potential “trigger points” that might cause crowds to riot.

One trigger point was “police arresting individuals (such as for assault on police or criminal damage)”.

In the summer of 2020, dozens of police officers were assaulted by BLM activists across Britain, including some 62 in London alone.

According to a 2024 report by Lord Walney, the Government’s independent adviser on political violence and disruption, officers were “kicked to the ground” and pelted with bottles and other missiles.

However, during the riots, police were told to “be mindful of possible increased tensions when interacting with the BAME community”, and warned against arresting violent agitators.

The risk assessment came from the National Police Coordination Centre (NPoCC), a body that coordinates police responses across the UK during times of crisis. The organisation, created by Theresa May in 2013, plays a central role in planning and coordinating the policing of major protests, riots and other large-scale public order incidents.

Following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died while resisting arrest in Minneapolis, the NPoCC warned the BLM protests would impact “UK community tensions” and could lead to “large scale disorder”.

Lord Walney’s report on the BLM riots describes an incident during which officers were “chased down Whitehall as demonstrators hurled objects and attacked them with sticks and rocks”.

Protesters also threw fireworks at the police, while one mounted officer was thrown from her horse, suffering a cracked collarbone, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

National monuments and statues were also vandalised and destroyed across the country, including protesters spraying “was a racist” on Winston Churchill’s statue in Parliament Square.

The NPoCC memo stated that for riots to occur “a significant trigger would need to emerge”, for example “death in police custody of a respected member of the BAME community or of a prominent gang member, or significant police altercation at protests”.

The document continued: “Reporting from the solidarity protests in London to date has identified trigger points for negative crowd reactions, which include… police arresting individuals (such as for assault on police or criminal damage).”

The NPoCC then recommended that “All forces [are] to consider potential trigger points at protests”.

The risk assessment has led to accusations of two-tiering policing, where ethnic minority groups are treated differently from white British people.

Suella Braverman, former Home Secretary and Reform Party MP, said the memo proved “two-tier policing is real in this country”.

She continued: “Can you imagine if pro-British protests were policed in such a weak manner? No. Because it is inconceivable that senior figures within the police would change how they operate for anyone other than BLM.”

“The policing of the BLM riots remains one of the darkest and worst moments in recent policing history.”

In 2024, officers firmly cracked down on protests and riots following the mass stabbing of young children by Axel Rudakubana, the child of Rwandan immigrants.

Harry Farrer, a 22-year-old with no previous convictions, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for throwing a plant at the back of a police officer during the protests.

David Spring, a retired train driver who was caught at a protest shouting “Who the f**k is Allah?” was given an 18-month prison sentence.

Peter Lynch, a 61-year-old grandfather, was jailed for two years and eight months, despite the judge admitting: “You did not yourself attack any police officer, as far as can be detected, but what you did was encourage by your conduct others to behave violently and you were part of this mob.”

Lynch, who was filmed screaming at police “protect my children” and “we are on the streets now to protect our kids,” was found dead in his cell after committing suicide just two months into his sentence.

Priti Patel, who was Home Secretary during the BLM protests, has faced criticism for presiding over “two-tier” justice.

A senior Reform Party source told me: “The institutional failure within the Home Office is directly the result of the catalogue of failures instituted when Priti Patel was Home Secretary.”

“Her chaotic reign not only led to the floodgates being opened on mass immigration, but completely eroded trust in the police and mob rule.”

“The thing about Steven is”, said former prime minister Liz Truss, turning to me at a DC cocktail party, “is that his legs should be tied together, his body weighted with stones, and thrown into the Potomac”.

Truss had uttered her death wish without the hint of irony, or a smile.

Just a few months prior to this encounter, I had sat down with the ex-PM for a fifty-minute exchange for GB News. During the interview, I gently pointed out that Truss, far from being the “Populist Conservative” she was claiming to be, had governed on the far-Left of the Tory Party.

With the CPAC conference being held in London this week, hosted by Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister, it is worth reflecting on the record of the many Conservative Party politicians now rebranding themselves as anti-establishment insurgents.

And, with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arriving in cinemas this week, it seems an apt moment to revive an ancient warning: beware Tories bearing gifts.

Truss gave me the interview to promote her book lamenting ‘the woke’. Her enemies were clear: “CINOs (conservatives in name only)”, “trans activism”, “leftist hegemony”, and excessively high immigration.

The only trouble? Since 2021, Truss, in her various ministerial roles, supported all of these things. She backed a ban on so-called “transgender conversion therapy”, was pictured holding a sign declaring herself an “LGBT+ ally”, and told the Equality and Human Rights Commission that the government did not intend to prevent biological men identifying as transgender from using female-only facilities.

As Secretary of State for the Department for International Trade, Truss’s permanent secretary sent weekly emails to the entire department promoting “Transgender Day of Awareness”, “Non-binary Awareness”, Black Lives Matter, cross-dressing officials, and trans activist charity Stonewall.

In response to these points, Truss admitted it was a mistake to have held the LGBT sign, but refused to criticise Antonia Romeo, who, as prime minister, she had wanted to promote (and who is now Cabinet Secretary).

As International Trade Secretary, Truss argued that post-Brexit trade deals should involve relaxing immigration rules. In 2021 she praised the “massive rise” in Indian students coming to Britain and argued for greater “business mobility” between the UK and India. Reports at the time made clear that expanding visa access for Indian nationals formed a key component of the trade negotiations she championed.

By 2022, during her premiership, Truss was considering easing English-language requirements for certain visas in order to bring more foreign workers into Britain, according to a report in The Times. Her government was also examining expanding the shortage occupation list and increasing the number of seasonal workers entering the country. The official “Growth Plan” produced under her premiership stated that increased skilled migration was important for economic growth and productivity.

While these points may have irked Truss during our interview, what I suspect really provoked her were my questions about history. It is one thing to admit hypocrisy, and quite another to reveal ignorance.

Truss served for some time as Foreign Secretary, a role previously held by titans such as Palmerston, Grey, Eden and Canning. With these figures and their intellectual seriousness in mind, I asked: Are you more of a Gladstonian, or Disraelite, in terms of foreign policy? Truss looked at me with glazed eyes.

For an even shorter period, as we all know, she served as prime minister, evoking even more titanic figures: William Pitt the Younger, Lord Salisbury, Stanley Baldwin, the Iron Duke, and Robert Peel. Who then was the best Tory PM, excluding the obvious answers of Churchill and Thatcher? After a long pause, she finally replied: “Javier Milei”.

Her post-government conversion to the radical Right is typical of Conservative Party MPs, ministers, and prime ministers. It is all very convenient to chuck out red meat on immigration, wokeism, and Net Zero after you leave elected office.

For some years it has been a mission of mine to hold Conservative and Reform politicians accountable from a Right-wing perspective. Too often Conservatives in particular have been given an easy ride by Britain’s media class, if by accident.

At the edge of the Grand Canyon, atop snow-topped peaks in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, on the slopes of the green sea of the Blue Ridge Mountains, I have discovered the wonder that is America.

On its 250th birthday, I want to offer my reflections on the country that rebelled against my own—and that I have called home for the last two and a half years.

During my years reporting in the United States for GB News and The Telegraph, I have witnessed some of the country’s worst horrors. In Seattle, I watched homeless drug addicts inject heroin into their arms while others wandered the streets in a fentanyl-induced stupor. I was attacked by vagrants in San Francisco, and narrowly avoided them in Washington, D.C. I have confronted Antifa activists in Portland, radical Islamic clerics in Detroit, and illegal immigrants in Denver.

And while there are many problems in the United States, from gun crime to welfare dependency, the country is far more than these extreme elements.

Upon moving to Arlington, a city bordering Washington, D.C., I was shocked at how clean the streets were. Accustomed to London’s piles of rubbish, pavements covered in chewing gum, and every public surface covered graffiti, I was reminded that another way of life is possible.

And I moved to the D.C. area at the perfect time. President Trump has beautified its public spaces, cleaning up the grand Union Station and refilling water fountains in parks across the city. The National Guard patrols the city daily, acting as a visible deterrent to would-be criminals. The murder rate has declined more than 40% in a single year.

D.C. is, admittedly, a standout American city. Its buildings are low-rise, and the capital’s monuments attract international visitors. It is walkable, safe, clean, historic and beautiful. It even has exceptional public transport.

Most cities in the US feature interchangeable skyscrapers amid concrete interchange networks choked with traffic. The car beat the train, and is a necessity in most places. While Europeans often dismiss the car, and embrace the tranquility of trains, they sometimes overlook the singular romance of the American road trip.

The sky somehow feels bigger in America. Driving 75 mph down a wide highway in the Texas plains, patriotic country music blasting, unlocks a joy unattainable in Europe.

Beyond the sprawling urban landscapes lie some of the nation’s most spectacular sights.

Driving through the deserts of Arizona and over the soaring mountain passes of Colorado, one cannot help but appreciate the genius of the people who built the richest nation on earth in little more than two centuries.

They did so in some of the roughest, and most spectacular, environments. Thousands of feet above sea level sit marvels of civilization: Denver, the Mile High City; Salt Lake City beneath the Wasatch Range; and Albuquerque, perched on the edge of a high desert.

In two years I have hiked more than 1,000 km across the North American continent. Nothing has brought me more joy than these adventures.

Most weekends I have driven out of Arlington to the Shenandoah Valley. The drive is about an hour and a half, through English-esque green fields with cows, barns, and MAGA signs. After an hour driving through flat countryside, the road dives down, and then immediately up, and you finally see them: the outlines of shallow, ancient green ridges formed hundreds of millions of years ago, the sky tinging the ridges blue.

On a mountain overlooking Harper’s Ferry in Maryland, a small 18th century munitions town that changed hands no fewer than eight times during the Civil War, I came into contact with a bear. On slopes where grey-coated Confederates once hauled hefty bronze cannons, a black bear strode across the wooded trail fifty metres ahead of me. After a brief standoff, the bear backed away.

During another Virginia hike, in an absent-minded march, I passed a large black snake which aggressively reared its head at me. I picked up pace, and my heart pumped faster. On such occasions a primal instinct kicks in: fear of the predator filled my veins with adrenaline, and for a moment I felt as those American frontier men must have felt every day as they expanded their nation westward.

Descending into the Grand Canyon, in awe of the vast landscape in front of me, surrounded by the sound of silence, was a semi-mystical experience. So too was trudging up two feet of deep snow in the mountains surrounding Provo, Utah, where there was no other human for miles. Sitting on a bench overlooking a gushing waterfall while eagles soared above was the American experience. Though I do not believe in God, I somehow felt closer to him. These wonders, preserved through the National Parks programme, should be seen by all.

A naked patriotism exists nearly everywhere outside of the major Left-wing cities. In Britain, the Union Jack has become a symbol of Right-Wing protest; in America the Star and Stripes is displayed proudly from airports, homes, diners, shops and petrol stations alike, a unifying symbol for most Americans.

Despite the rise of Mamdanism—a third-world, anti-American, anti-white movement—this is still a nation exuberant in pride and optimism.

Politically, there is much to be hopeful about. Though the MAGA project is by no means complete, no other Western country has voted for such a radical programme of mass deportations and delivered results.

After millions flooded the border in the Biden years, Trump shut it on day one. More than 600,000 people have been forcibly deported since January 2025. Compare this with the fourteen-year Tory government in Britain, which failed to deport a single migrant to Rwanda, and instead housed hundreds of thousands of illegals in hotels at taxpayer expense.

Legal immigration has also been targeted, the first Republican President to do so in decades, with, among other measures, major reforms to the H-1B visa programme. One estimate suggests that, for the first time in fifty years, America saw more migrants leaving the country than entering in 2025.

USAID, which propped up Left-wing NGOs with billions in taxpayer funds, is all but eliminated. Transgenderism, DEI and anti-white racism have been fought across the federal government and in universities. Whatever your criticisms of the second Trump administration, there is no doubt it has been the most effective right-wing government of any Western country outside of Hungary in the last decade.

It is not America’s politics, landscapes, or overt patriotism that fills me with most awe, however. It is its people.

In Springfield, Ohio, which saw nearly 15,000 Haitians flood the town of 58,000 during the Biden administration, I met Mark Sanders, a retired father. One morning Mark received a text from his eleven-year-old daughter. She had sent a picture of an overturned yellow school bus, surrounded by injured children. The bus, just ahead of her own, had been hit by an illegal Haitian migrant driving unlawfully. A child was killed, another was mauled. Mark’s daughter told a counsellor she was terrified to go to school, and would feel safer with her dad driving her bus. So Mark came out of retirement, and now drives his daughter’s yellow bus to school every day.

In Aurora, Colorado, I met Shannon Peterson, a softly spoken schoolteacher who for three decades voted Democrat. She once ran a group called Teachers United for Immigrant Rights, campaigned for gun control, and welcomed immigration as a moral good. Then a Venezuelan gang established itself in an apartment block just outside her home. Gunfire became routine. Bullet holes appeared on nearby buildings. Rather than flee, Shannon helped organise a neighbourhood watch to protect her peers. She now owns a handgun and has become a passionate supporter of Donald Trump. “If it wasn’t for Donald Trump,” she told me, “we still might be living next to gang members.”

Just around the corner lived Cindy Romero. She stayed in her apartment even as armed gang members occupied neighbouring flats. Instead of hiding, she installed cameras outside her front door, documenting men carrying rifles through the corridors, break-ins and shootings. Her footage became some of the defining images of the 2024 election campaign. After one gang member came to her door warning her not to call the police, he was shot dead outside her apartment just hours later. Yet she refused to be intimidated, taking her story to the media, thereby helping to expose the disastrous state of migration under Joe Biden.

In California I interviewed a brave whistleblower from FedEx, who exposed how her company outsourced her entire department’s jobs to India. I also met Bryan Peña, who had once made a living helping companies hire foreign workers before concluding that the system was failing his fellow Americans. He now runs organisations helping to support US workers laid off in favour of H-1B migrants.

These were not isolated encounters. Across America, I met countless ordinary people of extraordinary character.

And we must not forget where America came from.

England should be proud of its legacy as the founders of the thirteen colonies. There would be no United States without England; our language, our laws, our liberties all make America great.

God has indeed shed His grace on thee. Happy 250th birthday, America.

Few companies embody all three trends more clearly than IBM. The tech giant recently agreed to pay $17 million to settle allegations from the U.S. government that it discriminated against employees on the basis of race and sex. Federal authorities alleged the company tied bonuses and hiring decisions to demographic targets and restricted certain opportunities on the basis of identity. At the same time, IBM has relied heavily on imported labour, receiving 32,725 H-1B visa approvals over the past decade according to USCIS data. And increasingly, the company’s future appears rooted outside the United States altogether: under Indian-born CEO Arvind Krishna, IBM now employs roughly a third of its 280,000 workers in India, a figure that may rival, or even surpass, its American headcount.

If IBM represents the model, then the direction of travel is clear: less reliance on American workers, more dependence on imported labour and overseas workforces, and a growing corporate intoxication with India as both an economic and cultural destination.

“You can see that the world is moving into the Indian era,” declared Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff at the end of 2024. Since then the company has doubled its headcount in India to more than 14,000.

It was not an offhand remark. Nearly three decades earlier, as a young executive, Benioff travelled to southern India in a trip he would later describe as transformative.

In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, he recalled arriving in a remote village in Kerala, “like a scene from a movie… everybody dressed in white and orange, incense wafting through the air.” There, he met a guru who, he says, changed his life. “In your quest to change the world, don’t forget to do something for somebody else,” she told him.

For many workers, the blossoming of the Indian era marks the end of America’s.

One such worker is Jane (not her real name), a FedEx employee whose job was recently offshored to India. “There were several managers in my department, and one of them, who we thought was visiting family in India, was actually training our replacements,” she said.

As layoffs sweep through the US tech sector and corporate America, some of the country’s biggest companies are simultaneously expanding in India.

FedEx announced a $300m investment in an air cargo hub in Navi Mumbai in February; The company’s CEO, Raj Subramaniam, even flew out to the site of the new facility for a photo op.

At around the same time, Jane’s entire team’s jobs were sent to India. “I was really mad,” she said, adding that there was little she could do.

Some employees noticed a change in the company when Subramaniam, who was born and raised in India, took over from FedEx’s legendary founder Fred Smith in 2022. “Little by little things started getting worse, they put in place a program to reduce costs,” said Jane, who had worked at FedEx for almost two decades.

“When it was created back in the 1970s by Frederick Smith, it was a rags-to-riches story. People loved working there and worked there for decades. It was wonderful. You could call 1-800-Go-FedEx, and customer service was in America,” she recalled. In recent years FedEx has outsourced much of its IT operations and customer service functions to India.

Behind the growing corporate enthusiasm for India lies a straightforward economic reality: labour there is vastly cheaper than in the United States.

The median 2025 salary for engineering & data roles in the United States is $150,000; for the same roles in India workers are paid a median $22,000, according to a report by Deel and Carta, a payroll and compliance platform and equity management firm.

At a conference in San Francisco in September last year, Google CEO Sundar Pichai told the Indiaophile Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff that he “called the Prime Minister of India on Sunday night” to announce some important news.

Pichai recalled how, as a child, he “used to take this train through the south of India” in a town called Visakhapatnam. The audience at the conference cheered upon hearing the town’s name.

He went on: “We announced our largest ever AI investment outside the US, a $15 billion, one gigawatt plus data centre, 80% powered by clean energy with subsea cables going in.”

“The chance to transform a region like that with that kind of investment, it really meant a lot to be able to call the prime minister, who really cares about developing the country.”

Benioff commented that it “sounded like there’s a lot of folks here from India” and asked the audience to “stand up if you’re from India”. Dozens rose from their seats applauding.

Since 2020, Google and Salesforce alone have accounted for nearly 50,000 H-1B visa approvals.

To critics of Silicon Valley’s growing ties to India, the exchange was revealing.

“Here you have two tech CEOs, who have gotten rich by hiring foreign workers at cut-rate wages, bragging about how they are giving back to India. What about everything they have taken away from the United States by ignoring American labour?” comments Matthew O’Brien, Deputy Executive Director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).

Yet for many executives and professionals, India’s appeal extends beyond lower labour costs alone.

Silicon Valley-based immigration lawyer Navdeep Meamber says “there’s a lot of these tech industries in the States actually looking at India and moving jobs to India because of the attractions there.” She said salaries can be comparable to those in the US, and in India “you have domestic help, you have a driver, you have cooks, you have chefs. Life is much better than here. Here you’re doing everything yourself.”

Stephen Vivien, an engineer and former Google contractor based in the Valley, says Google asked him to train employees in the Philippines to take over the work of his team. “It felt humiliating in a way, to think that Google cared so little about your investment as a worker on their product, that they would just throw it to any group that they thought might be able to do it.” He said training his replacements felt “mean” and “harsh”.

Vivien said he worked closely with foreign tech workers at Google who came in on the H-1B visa program: “There were a lot of H-1B workers. Guys that had come from India, maybe some guys from other countries in Asia, they would create their own little network, their own little clique.”

Was there really a shortage of American workers? “Absolutely not”, Vivien said. “The Bay area is full of smart, American born, American educated, folks. And I kept looking around, I was like, “where are the guys and gals from San Jose State University, or Cal Poly [California Polytechnic State University]?””

In recent years there have been mass layoffs at major tech firms, blamed largely on improvements in AI. Companies have faced criticism for firing Americans while offshoring jobs, or relying on imported foreign workers.

So far in 2026 more than 142,000 workers have been impacted by layoffs in tech firms across America according to tracking platform TrueUp.

Deepika Singh, an immigration attorney, believes that in many cases, there simply aren’t enough capable Americans available to fill roles. “In general Indians come with a little more,” she said.

Singh, who moved to America from India more than twenty years ago, stressed that attitudes towards education are more vigorous in India than in the United States. “The education system is very robust in India,” she added. “Indians are born that way, we adapt ourselves to quick learning, we can pick up things easily.”

She argued that this can translate into an advantage in hiring. “When an H-1B is being filed, [Indians] do have an edge over some other applicants.”

The debate over H-1B visas has also drawn attention to the OPT [Optional Practical Training] programme, which allows foreign graduates to remain and work in the United States after completing their studies.

Kevin Lynn, Executive Director of the Institute for Sound Public Policy, described the OPT work authorisation program for foreign students as creating “competition for that bottom rung of the ladder, that first job out of college”. Under the OPT scheme foreign graduates are authorised to work for up to a year (and up to three if they are a STEM worker), and employers are exempted from paying FICA taxes. Under these conditions, foreign graduates can be much cheaper to hire than Americans. 294,253 students are in the US on the OPT program as of 2025; roughly half of them are from India.

The “Indian era” celebrated by Silicon Valley executives is not simply about economics. It reflects a deeper shift in the loyalties and identity of corporate America itself. The old model of the American corporation, rooted in national success, domestic workers, and long-term loyalty, is steadily disappearing. In its place is a global managerial class with little attachment to the West, and in some cases explicit loyalty to their home countries, such as India.

For the American worker, the fear is not merely losing a job. It is becoming a stranger in his own economy.
